Half a century of weather has softened this monument until the names barely surface from the granite — but the words that survive clean are Father and Mother, side by side at the top. That is how this family wanted them remembered. Not by occupation, not by achievement. By what they were to the people who raised the money for the stone.
The swags and the drapery are Victorian for mourning, and the whole thing leans a little now, the way old couples learn to lean into each other. I photographed it before it goes completely quiet.
