The eternal flame and honored guard at the Unknown Soldier memorial

Russia keeps eternal flames burning for its unknown dead of the Great Patriotic War, with an honor guard standing watch around the clock. Nobody knows who lies in the ground. Everybody knows what he did.

The guard changes on the hour, every step measured. Somewhere there was a mother who never found out what happened to her son. This is the country's answer to her.
